We had to store assets on the file system then we used a file watcher FTP tool called WebDrive to watch the Media folder on the file system and automatically upload new assets to Akamai. We then had to overwrite the media URL handler to give all media URLs back as <code>assets.oursite.com</code> where that sub-domain actually pointed to the Akamai server for static asset hosting.
